COMMUNITY SUPPORT WORKER

Community Support Workers at the Columbia Basin Family Resource Society provide necessary emotional and educational support to families, children and youth, and neurodiverse adults or those who have developmental and/or intellectual disabilities of the Elk Valley through interventions that are strength based and solution focused.  Provide service that facilitates meeting the client’s goals through participation in activities and experiences that build a trusting relationship and provide opportunities to practice skills, gain confidence and be involved in the community.

Work Hours: Permanent Full-time, 35-40 hours per week

Salary: based on experience, range between $22-25/hour

Location: With the opportunity to be hybrid, the position is currently based out of beautiful Fernie BC, providing support to families in the Ktunaxa ʔamakʔis also known as the Elk Valley and South Country. The region boasts some of the most spectacular mountain vistas, with world class adventures for everyone including: skiing, snowboarding, snow shoeing, cross country skiing, hiking, mountain biking hunting, fly fishing, boating, art and culture.

About the Job (your responsibilities):

  • Follow policies in The CBFRS Policy Manual and relevant Program Manual(s)
  • Ensure clients have their needs met in a safe environment that respects their unique physical, social, cultural, emotional, and intellectual needs and challenges
  • Provide support service to children and youth who have experienced family hardships, and children, youth and adults with support needs, to best meet the outcomes described in the individual referral to service
  • Provide service that facilitates meeting outcomes through participation in activities and experiences that build a trusting relationship and provide opportunities to practice skills, gain confidence and be involved in the community
  • Provide recreational opportunities to clients by accompanying clients to recreational events and providing them with coaching and support toward successful outings
  • Provide short- term intensive support and interpersonal skill enhancement services to families in order to reduce child risk as per contract
  • Provide services in a collaborative manner with MCFD and community service providers
  • Provide necessary emotional/educational support to children, youth, and their families through strengths based/ solution focused interventions
  • Be creative in developing and, if needed, restructuring, or modifying the program environment to best meet the client’s needs and ensure their safety
  • Assists client in areas of household maintenance, hygiene, and health related appointments as specified in the personal service plan
  • Maintains and builds effective relationships and advocates on the client’s behalf by:
    • Establishing / maintaining a support network for the client
    • Maintaining / promoting contact with family and outside advocates
    • Represents the client at meetings and advocating on their behalf, if applicable
  • Consult, liaise, and work as a team with other community professionals serving youth
  • Provide information on community resources and assist clients in accessing them through referrals and advocacy, as appropriate
  • Participate in monthly meetings and consults with Team Leader or designate
  • Submit monthly reports as per the organization’s requirements
  • Provide interventions and strategies that are strengths based, solution focused
  • Provide education and referrals as needed
  • Maintain client confidentiality
  • Take responsibility for personal growth and contributes to agency development by attending meetings, in-service workshops and participating in quality assurance programs

Your Qualifications:

  • Combination of education and related experience in the human service field.
  • Criminal Record Check for working with Vulnerable Adults and Children
  • Valid class 5 driver’s license and reliable vehicle
  • Emergency first aid with CPR B (Preferred or willing to receive training).
