The Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy (CBAL) is an innovative, multi-service nonprofit
organization that provides a broad range of programs and services related to literacy and
settlement for children, youth, families, adults, and newcomers to Canada.

Position Summary
As the language instructor, you will facilitate one to two multilevel classes, once per week for
adult English language learners in the Elk Valley. Instruction will take place from our CBAL office
in Fernie and may include in-person, online and hybrid options for learners.

Qualifications and Attributes
• Experience teaching English Language learners
• ESL Instructor certification or equivalent (TESOL) preferred
• Experience teaching a multi-level class beneficial
• Good communication and record-keeping skills
• Good computer skills and comfortable with online platforms – specifically Zoom
• Ability to foster a safe, inclusive and engaging learning environment
• Willingness to take training in Portfolio-Based Language Assessment if necessary (provided as
part of training)

Responsibilities
• Plan and teach one or two multilevel (2-hour) classes per week
• Develop a program around theme-based instruction to support reading, writing, speaking and
listening skills for successful settlement in Canada
• Develop engaging, relevant and student-centered lessons, in accordance with curriculum
guidelines
• Assess student progress through ongoing evaluation and feedback
• Maintain daily attendance logs and complete regular class reports
• Engage in paid training and professional development
• Collaborate with colleagues to share resources, strategies and best practices

Wages and Hours
Each 2-hour class taught is paid at 4 hours per week, with additional paid training hours provided.
Language classes run September to June and may expand based on availability, interest, and skill
set. The starting wage is $27.00 per hour.
